Title: Mason Street Story Description: Eleven children, ten of which are girls, range from six months to 21 years old. Together, they make up the Sumali Family. They are a Congolese family that immigrated to Mason Street in the Dewey Avenue neighborhood of Rochester, N.Y., in 2016 as refugees from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The children are students in the Rochester City School District (RCSD) and are attending school virtually because of restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As the family is so large, there is always a lot to be done around the house. This creates a strong sense of comradery among the siblings and their parents, as they help each other out with whatever needs doing, whether that be cleaning the house, schoolwork, or tending to the youngest children. First Caption: The children of the Sumali family play outside on Sep. 12, 2020 outside their home in Rochester, N.Y. The Sumali family are close friends with the Kandele family who live next door. The Kandele family is another immigrant family from Tanzania who came to Rochester in 2018. The children often play together.
