2023 Scholarship Awardees

Twelve college and university students have been selected by the National Press Photographers Foundation to receive thirteen $2,000 scholarships, Dr. Martin Smith-Rodden of Ball State University announced on behalf of the NPPF board of directors. These include two NEW scholarships: the Xan Korman Scholarship and the Liane Enkelis Scholarship for Women in Photojournalism. Smith-Rodden is the NPPF scholarship chair and a board member.

Morgan Timms is a photojournalist pursuing her graduate degree at Ohio University's School of Visual Communication. Her passion lies in capturing compelling visual narratives that shed light on pressing social and environmental issues. Morgan's work has been recognized through grants, awards, and workshops that have supported her career in photojournalism.

Joe Timmerman | Jimi Lott scholarship

Joe Timmerman is an undergraduate pursuing a double major in Visual Communication and Journalism at Ohio University. He has been recognized for his outstanding work in documentary photography, receiving multiple awards and grants for his projects. In November 2022, Joe was awarded the prestigious Provost Undergraduate Research Fund by Ohio University, a nearly $1,500 grant he applied for to support his ongoing documentary photography project about the surveyors of Mammoth Cave in Kentucky.

Pam Smith is a visual editor and photographer attending college at the University of Pittsburgh. From her very first semester, Pam has been an active member of The Pitt News, starting as a staff photographer and quickly rising to the position of visual editor. In her year and a half as the visual editor, Pam has contributed significantly to the paper, reintroducing photo stories and descriptive cutlines, expanding the staff and training materials, and collaborating with other sections to create more cohesive and consistent visuals.

Marielle Scott is a visual storyteller attending the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) in New York. Her passion for environmental storytelling solidified after she spent the summer of 2021 and 2022 in rural Northeast New Mexico as a photography and marketing services team member at Philmont Scout Ranch.

Allie Schallert, a talented young photojournalist, is pursuing her studies at Western Kentucky University. At 16, she began her career as an assistant for a local wedding photographer, quickly gaining her boss's trust through her fast learning and dedication to her work. She honed her skills in post-wedding production, including album and video production, and soon started shooting and editing videos on her own.

Leila Saidane is an undergraduate student attending The University of Texas at Austin, studying Radio-Television-Film and Journalism. Over the past two years, Leila has produced a diverse body of work for various Texas publications, including The Dallas Morning News, The Austin-American Statesman, and Community Impact, where she completed an internship in the fall of 2021. Leila's passion for journalism has been evident through her involvement with The Daily Texan, UT Austin's student newspaper. She has held multiple roles, including senior reporter, senior photographer, long-form investigative projects reporter, and associate photo editor.

Sophia Paffenroth is a passionate storyteller and journalist pursuing her Master’s degree at Northeastern University’s School of Journalism. Hirshson Byline Award for her academic excellence and commitment to professional ethics. Erica Dischino is a visual journalist and graduate photojournalism student currently attending Ohio University in the Visual Communication graduate program. With a deep passion for using photographs as a tool for reflection, Erica has honed her skills in capturing small moments of change and documenting the lives of individuals in various communities. Her latest project, titled "It's Our Turn Now," examines the experience of youth in Minnesota as they navigate the challenges of coming of age in an unprecedented social landscape.

Minh Connors is currently attending college at the Missouri School of Journalism. He achieved a significant milestone by receiving a full scholarship through the NJ STARS program to pursue his education at Brookdale Community College, without which higher education would not have been possible. His passion for visual storytelling was ignited when he received recognition from the Missouri Press Association for a short documentary on demolition derby drivers. This inspired him to pursue a graduate degree in photojournalism at Missouri.

William Allen-DuPraw is attending graduate school to pursue his passion for documentary photography and filmmaking. His achievements include creating the short film "There and Back Again," which portrays the story of Toby Jenkins as he navigates addiction recovery after being released from jail. Although the film has not received a wide distribution or awards, Toby Jenkins thanked William, stating, "Thank you, Will, you made us look human," which William considers a true accomplishment.

VINCENT ALBAN | Bob East Scholarship

Vincent Alban is a senior undergraduate student in the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) honors program. He has been recognized for his outstanding work as a photojournalist and storyteller. During his time at RIT, Vincent pursued photo stories that helped contextualize social issues in urban communities, such as Rochester, N.Y., and Baltimore, Md., places with deeply connected communities and historical and systemic challenges. He feels reporting on these issues is important and hopes to continue throughout his career.
