2023 Scholarship Awardees
Twelve college and university students have been selected by the National Press Photographers Foundation to receive thirteen $2,000 scholarships, Dr. Martin Smith-Rodden of Ball State University announced on behalf of the NPPF board of directors. These include two NEW scholarships: the Xan Korman Scholarship and the Liane Enkelis Scholarship for Women in Photojournalism. Smith-Rodden is the NPPF scholarship chair and a board member.

Joe Timmerman | Jimi Lott scholarship
Joe Timmerman is an undergraduate pursuing a double major in Visual Communication and Journalism at Ohio University. He has been recognized for his outstanding work in documentary photography, receiving multiple awards and grants for his projects. In November 2022, Joe was awarded the prestigious Provost Undergraduate Research Fund by Ohio University, a nearly $1,500 grant he applied for to support his ongoing documentary photography project about the surveyors of Mammoth Cave in Kentucky.

Pam Smith is a visual editor and photographer attending college at the University of Pittsburgh. From her very first semester, Pam has been an active member of The Pitt News, starting as a staff photographer and quickly rising to the position of visual editor. In her year and a half as the visual editor, Pam has contributed significantly to the paper, reintroducing photo stories and descriptive cutlines, expanding the staff and training materials, and collaborating with other sections to create more cohesive and consistent visuals.

His passion for visual storytelling was ignited when he received recognition from the Missouri Press Association for a short documentary on demolition derby drivers. His achievements include creating the short film "There and Back Again," which portrays the story of Toby Jenkins as he navigates addiction recovery after being released from jail. During his time at RIT, Vincent pursued photo stories that helped contextualize social issues in urban communities, such as Rochester, N.Y., and Baltimore, Md., places with deeply connected communities and historical and systemic challenges. He feels reporting on these issues is important and hopes to continue throughout his career.
